Ear infection number four showed up on a Tuesday in late March, about ten days after my son went back to school from spring break. Standing in the pediatrician's office waiting for her to look in his ear, I remember thinking: again? This is starting to feel like a lot. But it didn't occur to me to ask why, not really, because each of the four times this had happened that year, there was already a perfectly reasonable explanation sitting right there waiting for me.

The first time, back in September, I blamed the new school year. New classroom, new kids, the usual parade of colds that shows up the first two weeks everyone's back together after summer. The second time, right after Thanksgiving, I blamed his cousins, one of them had a runny nose the entire long weekend we spent together. The third time, in January, I blamed the cold snap. And the fourth time, this one in March, I mostly just shrugged. Some kids get more ear infections than others. Maybe ours is one of them.

Four infections. Four separate, individually believable stories. It never once crossed my mind that they might actually be the same story, told four times.

I only found out they were the same story by accident. A kid gets sick in September, and September is when school starts, so of course kids get sick in September. A kid gets sick the week after Thanksgiving, and somebody at Thanksgiving was sniffling, so obviously that's what happened. Every single data point gets handed a perfectly local explanation, and every local explanation feels sufficient in the moment you're the one holding a squirming, ear tugging kid at seven in the morning on a school day. Nobody standing in that moment is thinking: wait, is this the third time this has happened right after a break ended?

That's not a failure of attention on the parent's part. It's just how memory handles this particular kind of question. You're being asked to hold four dates in your head at once, spread across two calendar years and roughly seven months, and then notice that they cluster around a shared feature none of them announce out loud. Ordinary memory is good at plenty of things. It was never built to spontaneously lay four widely separated events on the same mental timeline and check the spacing between them. That's not really a memory task. It's closer to a math problem, and it's one nobody ever thinks to run, because nothing in daily life prompts you to run it. There's no moment where a switch flips and says: go back and compare all four dates.

Ask the pediatrician's office and they'll tell you the same thing from their side. They see one illness at a time too, unless someone specifically flags the history. A doctor treating ear infection number four in March has no particular reason to ask whether numbers one through three also happened right after a break, unless a parent brings it up, and a parent can't bring up a pattern they haven't noticed yet.

What the Calendar View Actually Showed Me

A kid who gets migraines every single time a new sports season kicks off and practice schedules go from nothing to five days a week overnight. None of these are secrets exactly. They're just hard to see from memory alone, for the same reason the ear infections were: the events are too spread out, too mixed in with everything else going on, and nothing in daily life prompts anyone to line them up and check the spacing.

Seeing the pattern doesn't mean you suddenly understand the underlying cause. It might be the ordinary germ exposure that comes with any group of kids reconvening after time apart. It might be a sleep schedule that gets disrupted every time a break ends and doesn't fully recover before symptoms show up. It might be stress, a schedule change, or plain coincidence dressed up to look meaningful. None of that is something a parent is supposed to diagnose from a calendar screen. What a calendar screen gives you is the question worth asking, instead of a vague sense that your kid just gets sick a lot.

Noticing a pattern like this doesn't hand you a diagnosis, and it isn't supposed to. What it hands you is a genuinely useful question to bring to the next appointment, instead of a vague feeling that your kid gets sick a lot. "He's had four ear infections this year, and every single one started within two to three weeks of going back to school after a break" is a completely different sentence than "he gets ear infections sometimes." The first sentence gives your pediatrician something concrete to think about: whether it's worth watching the return to school stretch more closely, whether a disrupted sleep schedule is playing a role, or whether it really is just the ordinary germ exposure that comes with any group of kids reconvening after time apart. None of those are conclusions a parent is supposed to reach alone. They're conversations, and a specific pattern makes the conversation sharper than a guess ever could.

Bring the calendar screen itself to the appointment if that's easiest, or export the whole history as a PDF report beforehand, so your pediatrician isn't squinting at your phone during a fifteen minute visit.
